Topic Four: Being a Facilitator of Learning
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this reading you will be able to:
1. Describe how a facilitator of learning would guide the educational process
2. Explain the role of a facilitator of learning
3. Identify how feedback is provided to the learner by the learning facilitator

Conceptual Framework: Facilitating the Learning Process
The role of the facilitator of learning is to guide the process of discovery learning. The facilitator's responsibility is to create the environment within which the learner will develop understanding of the material to be mastered. A major role of the facilitator is that of role-model for being actively engaged in the learning process. Of equal importance to facilitating learner autonomy is to nurture reflection and self-evaluation. Additionally, encouraging learners to engage in a collaborative learning process must be an integral part of support individual learning.

Example
A metaphor of how the relationship between the learner and the facilitator of learning can nurture the learning process is found in the relationship between a woman giving birth and a midwife facilitating the process. My wife and I have six children. All six were born at home. My role was to serve as the "midwife" support for my wife as she went through the process of giving birth to our children. The facilitator of learning is as actively engagement in the learning process as the learner. The role, however, is not as "teacher." The facilitator's responsibility is to assist the self-directed process of the learner.

Opportunities for Facilitating Learning
A powerful tool for supporting active engagement in learning is to encourage collaborative learning with peers.
As is depicted in the photo above, it is also important to serve as a support for the development of autonomy through providing direct examples through modeling the "how to" of a task.

Self-Assessment
1. When you were a child, can you remember a time when someone helped you learn a task? What was the task?
2. If you were able to remember a time when someone helped you to learn a task, how did you feel about the experience of success?
3. Give an example of how a feeling of accomplishment that you experienced as a child impacts on how you feel about mastering a task as an adult?
