By the end of viewing this 3-part presentation the reader will be able to:
1. Apply the Understanding by Design template to the construction of learner-centered curriculum
2. Align learner-centered curriculum to the content standards and common core following UbD format.
What is Understanding by Design (UbD)?
UbD is a curriculum design process used to enhance student learning. To utilize UbD effectively educators must address the following questions:
1. What are the knowledge and skills that I want young children to understand?
2. What are the content standards, common core, and/or developmentally appropriate practices that I want the knowledge and skills to address?
3. How can the knowledge and skills be directly assessed?
4. What do I need to include in my design to provide differentiated learning responsive to individual learners?
The Understanding by Design model sees the adult as a facilitator of learning, not a "teacher."
This means that the adult must create an environment that nurtures active student engagement and self-directed learning.
